It's not often a politician praises you for a positive article on an opponent, but that's just what happened when I wrote candidate features for the 2019 General Election.

In fact, all three candidates in Bath were very pleased with how I handled things, which I think says something about my balance and diplomacy.

I sat down with the three active candidates individually for long and amicable discussions.

While I did ask the obvious snagging questions, I didn't go in extremely hard line.

There is always plenty of news about politicians attacking each other – I wanted to give candidates a chance to make a full case without being shouted down part way.

More than that, I wanted Bath to know their candidates as individual people who could potentially represent their interests – not just as pawns in national politics.

On top of representing good relationship-building whatever the result, the interviews were a treasure trove of unexpected news angles.
