This is what it is like to grow up transgender in Bath

I first met Charlie Scarterfield when he launched a crowd-funding campaign at 17 to help him freeze his eggs before medically transitioning from female to male.

It was an irresistible news headline, but one that I was determined to handle sensitively.

It was no surprise that the story was subsequently picked up nationally, including in the Daily Mail.

With his mother's permission, I sat down with Charlie for an in-depth interview, in which a whole host of other potential stories emerged.

There was too much to try to put into one story, so I focused on the immediate headline and then, because I had gained his trust, I could check back in with Charlie for follow-up stories.

Perhaps the most powerful one was this story on the struggles Charlie faced growing up transgender in Bath where he openly shares how he was driven to several suicide attempts.
