Transport Minister Claire Perry Will Talk to Wiltshire Students this Week about Exciting Opportunities in Rail

Claire Perry, the Conservative MP of the Devizes constituency and the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, will open the Careers Fair at Devizes School this Friday, the 22nd of April 2016. She will be speaking to secondary school students from right across Wiltshire about the many opportunities in the rail sector for young recruits, due to the greatest investment in rail since the Victorian era.

This follows the launch of the Strategic Transport Apprenticeship Taskforce (STAT) on the 15th of April, which will support the government’s aim of creating 30 000 apprenticeships in transport by 2020. It is also tasked with increasing the diversity of the transport workforce.

The Chair of STAT, High Speed Two Chief Executive Simon Kirby, who was a former apprentice of British rail, said: “Being an apprentice was a great opportunity for me to pursue a vocational education and gain experience in the workplace, whilst learning at the same time.”

While the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “I want to see every part of Britain benefiting from a growing economy and that is why our investment in transport won’t just help people get around, it will help them get on.”

Claire Perry MP continues to work with Young Crossrail and Women into Construction to encourage young students, particularly women, to consider a career in the booming rail industry.

Hungerford Residents Welcome New Youth Community Centre

Hungerford Town Council are pleased to announce the opening of Hungerford Youth Community Centre for students and young adults in the Hungerford region. The council will be hosting a free BBQ for students and their parents to come see the new facilities and discuss relevant services on the 24th of June from 10am to 4pm.

The community centre will form a youth hub where secondary school and university students can gain access to mental and sexual health services, academic tutoring and career advice. The centre will also host youth social functions and sporting activities. Private hire of the venue for appropriate functions will be available.

The council began work on this project after surveys of families in the area highlighted the need for Hungerford's high youth population to have access to supportive and recreational services. Principal Jan Turner of Newbury's Horris Hill School was very pleased to hear of the opening: “It was clear to see how students coming to the school from the Hungerford area were at a disadvantage to other students with greater access to local services. It is good to know that something is being done about this.”
